New cardiovascular horizons targets multidisciplinary approach to limb salvage and much more
New Cardiovascular Horizons ([NCVH] New Orleans, La), a multidisciplinary meeting focused on Peripheral artery disease (PAD) and peripheral interventions, will take place June 2–5, 2010. Entering its 11th year, NCVH is the longest running “head-to-toe” cardiovascular meeting to concentrate on limb salvage and amputation prevention techniques. Originally established in 2000 as a fall meeting, organizers moved the meeting ahead of hurricane season in 2009 in attempts to prevent any further weather related disruptions.
Not All Pressure Ulcers Are Avoidable
The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel’s ([NPUAP] Washington, DC) recent consensus conference panelists agreed that patients who choose not to participate in their own pressure ulcer prevention could potentially develop unavoidable pressure ulcers. They also agreed that there are clinical situations in which the development of pressure ulcers is unavoidable. The conference was held at Johns Hopkins Medical Center (Baltimore, MD) and 24 multidisciplinary experts in pressure ulcer prevention and treatment comprised the voting panelists.
New adhesive silicone gels provide gentle adhesion to skin during wound healing
Bluestar Silicones (Anaheim, Calif), one of the world’s leading fully integrated global silicones manufacturers, recently launched a new line of skin adhesive elastomer gels. The new Silbione® Silicone Gels provide gentle, non-irritating adhesion for a range of wound and skin care applications. Wound care is a growing market for silicones because of the material’s property profile and biocompatibility. The gel skin adhesives are two-part, platinum-catalyzed silicone gel elastomers that are manufactured in a clean environment to ensure healthcare grade levels of purity and quality.
Wound care product stops bleeding and assists soldiers on the battlefield
Celox™ granules are high surface area flakes. When the flakes come in contact with blood, the product forms a robust gel like clot in 30 seconds. It works independently of the body’s normal clotting processes. The product’s clotting ability has been proven to work in the cold (hypothermia) or in the presence of common anti-coagulants such as warfarin. Since it does not generate heat, Celox will not burn the casualty or care giver. The product is made with chitosan, which is broken down by lysozyme, a human enzyme that leaves glucosamine, a sugar that is normally found in the body.
