Compound in human saliva accelerates wound healing
Scientists from The Netherlands found that histatin, a small protein in saliva once believed to only kill bacteria, significantly accelerates wound healing. Researchers used epithelial cells that line the inner cheek, cultured in dishes until the surfaces were completely covered with cells. Then they made an artificial wound in the cell layer in each dish by scratching a small piece of the cells away. In one dish, cells were bathed in an isotonic fluid without any additions. Convatec (Princeton, NJ) unveiled its Versiva® XC™ Gelling Foam Dressings with Hydrofiber® in both adhesive and non-adhesive formulations for treating acute and chronic wounds.

Digital wound imaging system assists physicians
Briggs Medical Supply Company (Des Moines, Iowa) introduces Patient Photo Record System (PPRS), a system that combines Canon® imaging technology with the company’s Medirule® measurement overlay grids and other image documentation and storage products.
The system’s features include an automatic digital wound measurement grid, the ability to electronically archive and transmit images to physicians, and a security system to further prevent the digital manipulation of images after the photograph is taken.

SAWC/WHS survey provides insight regarding change in guidelines
DM Systems, Inc. (Evanston, Ill) recently made results from a survey conducted at the 2008 Symposium on Advanced Wound Care and Wound Healing Society Meeting (SAWC/WHS) available. A total of 153 professionals who visited the DM Systems booth completed the survey, which revealed how much the new CMS guidelines will change the way healthcare professionals think about and respond to heel pressure ulcers.
Clinical trial affirms honey’s healing benefits for venous leg ulcers

Oculus Innovative Sciences (Petaluma, Calif) will launch its Dermacyn® wound treatment product in China by sending samples of the product to hospitals in 10 China provinces. Dermacyn Wound Care with Microcyn Technology is a nonirritating, nonsensitizing, no-rinse dermal wound care treatment for moistening absorbent wound dressings, debriding, and cleaning acute and chronic dermal lesions. Microcyn’s super oxygenated water keeps the wound moist and is effective against bacteria, viruses, mold and spores, including MRSA-resistant bacteria.
Skin and soft tissue infection test receives FDA clearance
Cepheid (Sunnyvale, Calif) received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its Xpert™ MRSA/SA Skin and Soft tissue Infection (SSTI) test, which runs on the GeneXpert® System for the rapid detection of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Staphylococcus aureus (SA, typically methicillin-sensitive) in skin and soft tissue infections.
FDA advises companies to cease marketing unapproved ophthalmic BSS drug products containing papain
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced that companies marketing unapproved ophthalmic balanced salt solutions (BSS) and unapproved topical drug products containing papain must stop manufacturing and marketing these products or risk enforcement action. The FDA is taking these actions because it has received reports of serious adverse events associated with the products’ usage.
