September 2012 named Chronic Wound Care Awareness Month in Maryland

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has proclaimed September as Chronic Wound Care Awareness Month in conjunction with the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care (SAWC) Fall 2012 meeting being held September 12-14 in Baltimore.

Wound care clinicians attending from the state of Maryland, across the US, and around the world benefit from the educational information presented at the SAWC Fall meeting. The program’s focus on evidence-based medicine greatly improves clinical outcomes while helping providers reduce the overall financial burden of chronic wound care. To establish best practices and improve healing outcomes in patients with wounds, the SAWC Fall meeting serves to bridge practice gaps and provide a forum for clinicians to explore scientific breakthroughs within the field.

Chronic wounds affect 5.7 million patients, cost an estimated $20 billion dollars annually, and are a burden to patients, healthcare professionals, taxpayers, and the US healthcare system. The annual incidence of chronic wounds is expected to increase with the growing elderly, diabetic and obese populations. In support of SAWC Fall, Governor O’Malley states that, “together, we can move forward by harnessing the healing potential of our greatest asset — the skills and talents of our people.”

The annual SAWC Spring and Fall meetings are the premier educational wound care programs within the field and the largest annual gathering of interdisciplinary wound care specialists in the United States. The SAWC meetings are produced by the North American Center for Continuing Medical Education, LLC (NACCME) (Millstone Twp, NJ) and HMP Communications LLC (Malvern, PA). The SAWC Spring and Fall events are also the official meetings of the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care (AAWC), the preeminent, multidisciplinary organization for advanced wound care clinicians.
