Can You Help?

Which certification is best for working in a hospital? I've been doing wound care for almost 4 years and would like advice on whether to take WCC or CWS. I am also interested in WOCN, but I have no time as of now to go to the east coast for a month and take off from work.
Thank you.

If time is an issue , WCC is a one-week program with awesome instructors very knowledgeable in wound care. There are also WON programs online. I am a WCC with a lot of experience prior to the course and I took the WebWoc program thru Metropolitan State University. All online and then worked with a hospital preceptor. You can take all three components or just wounds.
Hope this helps.

It depends on what your goals are and what field of healthcare and level of education you have. WCC, in my opinion, offers a fabulous place to start, providing the foundation of wound care. It is open to a broad section of the interdisciplinary team, takes ~1 week of time away from work.

The CWS does not require attendance at a program. A review class is offered throughout the year. It is open to many disciplines. Having a good grasp on cellular biology and pharmacokinetics is needed.

WOCN is open to bachelor prepared nurses. There are on site programs, low residency programs and totally online programs. The online programs require that the student identify a preceptor and complete the clinical component with that preceptor.

Each have their advantages. The WOCNB, the certifying organization for WOC nursing, has a nice downloadable file comparing the three certifications.

You might think about the future of your practice and how beneficial each certification will be to you, ie, if you decide to obtain a higher level of practice and become a non-physician provider. L

I just recently obtained my WCC. I was in wound care full time for 5 years, then moved to a different town and was away from wound care for a bit. I found the class very good and it's a good place to start. I am currently working on my BSN and will eventually go for the CWCN aspect through WOCN. I will have to decide whether to add the ostomy part to the certification. I am very happy that I went ahead with the WCC.
