American Urological Association launches patient information website
Many questions about urologic health can be answered discreetly and with authority through a website launched by the American Urological Association. The web site was written and reviewed by the world's leading urology experts in partnership with the American Foundation for Urologic Disease (AFUD), whose mission is to prevent and cure urological diseases through the expansion of research, education and public awareness. The site was designed to promote urological health and educate patients about all aspects of urology.
Information available on the website includes the fact that more than 15 million Americans, mostly women, suffer from urinary incontinence. In women over 65, the incidence rate is 25% and in men over 65, the incidence rate is 15%. Visitors to the site can search by adult or pediatric conditions or by entering a keyword search. Written text and medical illustrations explain the conditions. The content is intended to educate individuals on urologic issues, but is not intended to be a substitute for a consultation with a urologist. Visitors to the site also can use it to locate a physician. For questions or comments, e-mail urologyhealth@auanet.org. - OWM
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy to be reimbursed
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently announced coverage dates and guidelines of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy for the treatment of diabetic wounds of the lower extremities. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one piece to the puzzle in treating the already compromised non-healing diabetic wounds. With Medicaid and third party coverage of this therapy, people with diabetes can hope to recover more quickly from an otherwise devastating amputation.
